She seems to be confused and disturbed by her dreams. Chloe walks in the dark and dense night as an insomniac wanderer. She feels suddenly tired and she falls asleep again. Then Nymphs appear and dances while Chloe is sleeping. The Nymphs interfere in Chloe ́s dreams without her being aware of this fact.

Instrumentation: Large orchestra (3,3,3,3/4,3,3,1/Perc. x5/Hrp. x2/Cel./ Strings)

First performance: Not premiered yet

-Orchestral Version- Diván de Chloe is the principal aria from the opera Gruta de Ninfas and is also part of the work titled Libro Rojo. It can be performed as part of the opera or as an independent concert piece. In addition to the original chamber version for soprano and seven instruments, is available this orchestral version.

Icono partitura 5Duration: ca 9´

Instrumentation: 2-2-2-2, 3-2-2-x, 3 perc., cel. harp., strings.

First performance: Not performed yet.

Program Notes: A long time ago I was strolling along at a traditional fair in Buenos Aires when I saw an old man selling used books. One of the books was Daphne et Chloe by Longus, written in Ancient Greece. This text was used by Maurice Ravel to compose his ballet. I felt curious to know the original story that had inspired Ravel. When I opened the book it was all magic and I could only close it after I had finished reading it

My composition El Diván de Chloe uses a fragment from this book to recreate Chloe ́s vision of a certain part of the story. She is sad and sorrowful because she thinks that Daphne does not love her. She walks in the fields taking care of her sheep while speaking to the Nymphs.

Note: Both Diván de Chloe and Laberinto de Daphne are different pieces but they both have the same orchestration.

Suspended cyrcles (Piano solo)

This piece was selected by pianist Horacio Lavandera in order to be recorded to his TV broadcast called Tendiendo Puentes con Horacio Lavandera. The event included an interview with the composer and a whole program dedicated to Arias music.

Icono partitura 5Other versions: Revision 2013 (For Horacio Lavandera)

Duration: ca 12´

Instrumentation: Piano solo

First performance: 8th August, 2012 @Jong Komponiste Koncert – Potch Conservatory of North-West University, South Africa. Catrien Mulder, piano

Concert note: Some music creates the impression that each section is progressing to a certain state in order to resolve.Suspended Cyrcles is different. I intended to write a piece for solo piano of which the ´bubbles´ behave in different ways, something like what we would experience if we were floating inside different clouds and we become part of the effects that wind would have on them. Sometimes the winds blow furious, ad at others more gently. The listener is transported from one cloud to another, without felling that any one experience has come to a close. The composition is not meant to a present person, even myself, or another concrete entity. I wanted to recreate for myself (and the audence) an analogy of my experience of the real world: a reality in witch we often have simultaneous experiences, and in which not every experience leads to a climax or resolution. The final section of the composition is very peaceful and its represents to me the felling of beeing in a place, like a dream, where one can just experience the impressions without the intention to steer in a certain direction. I composed this piece specicafically for my residency as a composer and as a conductor in Potchestfroom, South-Africa.

Chaak ikk´(Mayan Tempest) – Flute and tape

Chaak Ikk´(Mayan Tempest) for Flute and electronic tape was composed in 2011 with the support of the Mexican Center for Music and Sonic Arts. For the electronic track please contact  the composer.

Icono partitura 5Instrumentation: Flute and fixed tape.

First performance: 12th August, 2011 @ CMMAS. Mexican Center for Music and Sonic Arts, Morelia, Mexico. Darío Portillo, flute.

First recording: Recorded at CMMAS studios in Morelia, Mexico.Memo Portillo, flute.

Concert notes: When I arrived to Morelia for doing my residence at CMMAS (Mexican Centre for Music and Sonic Arts), I was inspired in starting a new work, but I had no idea what I wanted to say the world. In first days, I started to walk around Morelia´s streets and I saw the strong influence of Spanish colonization but I could not see the influence of the original native people of America. This appreciation affected me a lot. So, this idea inspired my piece: I tried to represent the arrival of Hernán Cortés to America, but with the vision of a young girl who saw all the tragic facts.

Flute is the girl and the tape represents all the rest (colonizer, the sea, the land and the genocide).

The Long sounds of the beginning evoke the girl looking at the sea (and ships coming), the meeting of both civilization it´s represented by rhythmical section. Later, genocide began with the rhythmical agitation and dissonant intervals. Piece finishes in deaths of the girl (solo flute sad melody).

She walks in the fields taking care of her sheep while speaking to the Nymphs.

“I suffer in spite of not being hurt, and hold myself under a deep shadow.
Daphne is beautiful, but the world is filled with beauty.
No doubt this sting that now reaches deep in my heart is much more cruel than any other that I have ever felt.

I would like to be his flute, only to touch his slips
I wish I were a little goat, so that he could hold me in his arms!
Oh! Nymphs! You leave me to die with you! Daphne has taken my dream from me.”

This composition was premiered on 29th August, 2013 by Erica Eloff and the North West University New Music Ensemble conducted by Au Arias in its original version for soprano and seven instruments. The orchestration was made in November 2013. El Diván de Chloe was premiered through the generosity of Hannes Taljaard and Erica Eloff and its dedicated to my dear grandmother, Catita.

Concert notes: This Work was composed as an attempt of adaptation or re-writing of one of my quintets (Walking in the dark forest). Enjambre Multifónico Ensamble request me a piece for them and I had the idea to adapt that work. When I started to adapt the score I began to change the instrumentation, harmony, textures, rhythm structures; and I realized that a new piece was borning. I only respected original feelings and form (not to much). This music represents somebody´s feelings walking through the city at dark night: Introspection, fear, surprise, happiness and sadness.Texts used into this works by Goethe (Faust), Dante (The Divine Comedy) and Saramago (El Equipaje del Viajero). All texts rise a lot this work.Female voice have to recitate and act this words for all the stage, but without singing.

Cantique de Saint Jean (Mezzo & piano)

Icono partitura 5Duration: ca 8´

Instrumentation: Mezzo & piano.

First performance: 4th August, 2016 @Teatro Nacional Cervantes, Buenos Aires, Argentina.
